Hungary must start to monitor the effects of the toxic red sludge in the concerned wetlands. Although there aren’t any Natura 2000 areas near the burst reservoir, the pollution got into the Marcal, Raba and Danube, may caused serious damage in conservation areas. We have to pay attention particularly to Szigetköz, which is an Important Bird Area. Although most of the birds have already migrated from Hungary, the amphibians, and vertebrates related to wetlands surely suffered heavy losses.
