Hungary must start to restore the sludge-polluted habitats immediately

Most species connected to water may survive under pH 9, but there are also potentially more sensitive endangered fish and other species in the affected habitats. The effect of alkaline water was obvious in the fish stock of river Marcal. It can be concluded that affected parts of waterways until Rába river (downstream river, where Marcal joins to) was cleared from all biological forms. Birdlife Hungary trusts the alkaline water to be diluted enough in bigger downstream waters (Mosoni Duna, Duna) to environmentally harmless concentration.

One must aware that every restoration work should be carried out as quick as possible, but by using the precautionary principle. E.g. neutralising alkaline sediment must not mobilise bonded metal pollutants. Moreover Birdlife Hungary suggests to make every data and document public during the damage mitigation process, in order to carry out effective monitoring and conservation measures.

After launching monitoring efforts on the effect of damages, nature conservation sector has to start various programs to restore the habitats, and help the native species to return to the wetlands. It is important also to prevent the enter of invasive, alien species. This ecological disaster draws attention to the fact, that society only pays attention to the natural resources, when one has to pay for the restoration of them.
